City Park Preparing For Soft Opening In Fall

With spring 2020 delivering an abundance of sunshine, warm weather, and conditions favorable for growing grass, the City and County of Denver is aiming to reopen City Park Golf Course (CPCG) to the public in the fall. The City has been closely monitoring establishment of the turf on the course and believes it will be able to withstand limited play later this year, with fewer rounds than normal to be scheduled in 2020 to promote further establishment of the turf and protect this new community asset, creating a lasting legacy for future generations.

Denver closed City Park Golf Course in November 2017 to construct new features to manage the stormwater that naturally flows through this location, improve water quality, and reduce flood risks in neighborhoods north of the course. With extensive community input, the course was modernized and redesigned to improve playability, while maintaining its historic Parkland-style look and feel. The new course offers:

  • 18 holes of golf and a new full-size driving range
  • New clubhouse and returning nines
  • Dedicated 4-hole course for the First Tee of Denver program

Over the next few months, Denver will continue monitoring and establishing the new turf in preparation for reopening to the public later this year.

Course Improvements

Wellshire Golf Course

Wellshire Drainage Improvements Completed

Wellshire has finished installing the underground drain pipe to dry out areas on #1, #7 and #10 fairways. These areas have some new sod that is growing in where the drainage water from the lake was making these fairways soggy.  We appreciate your patience during the construction and hope you enjoy the improved playing conditions on these holes.

Highline Canal Project

The Highline Canal Project began construction on May 4th. The portion of the project on Wellshire Golf Course will connect the Cherry Hill neighborhood to Wellshire and Eisenhower Park through two underpasses on Hampden and South Colorado Blvd. The trail will run parallel to hole #17 and be protected by a 10' high safety fence. This project will close the existing gap in the High Line Canal Trail and allow users to connect to and from Cherry Hills Village.  It will take approximately one year to complete.

Kennedy Golf Course Safety Notice

Your safety is very important to us, therefore we have closed the bridge on #9 Creek at Kennedy Golf Course.

The annual release of water from the Cherry Creek reservoir caused underscoring to the bridge making it unsafe. Unfortunately, repairing or replacing the bridge is not a quick fix.  We are closing it until we can repair or replace it this fall. There will be an
alternate route provided during this time.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we assess the situation.
